The Upside of Upskilling Employees

The Upside of Upskilling Employees

Providing opportunities for employees to advance their expertise can go a long way in job retention and company loyalty.

In the hospitality industry, many people start in entry-level positions and work their way up the ladder. Upskilling—teaching an employee an additional skill to expand their expertise—generally helps advance a person along a set career path. Today, providing the opportunity to upskill also directly links to job satisfaction and longevity.

Upskilling is an empowering tool. Learning more skills, or taking existing expertise to the next level, gives employees a chance to grow. And it demonstrates that their employer cares about their professional development.

Here’s a roundup of some of the training and development courses and certifications in hospitality that employees can take advantage of.

Free hospitality training

The NCRLA Foundation Hospitality & Tourism Training Program provides free training courses, certifications, and educational resources, available at no cost to North Carolina workers and residents.

The program includes resources and materials to prepare high school students for a postsecondary degree or a career in culinary arts; courses to help employees returning to the industry develop existing skills to prepare for a more advanced role; and certifications for workers looking to advance their careers.

All courses, credentials, and certifications offered are nationally recognized as best in class for the hospitality industry.

ServSafe® certification courses

The National Restaurant Association’s ServSafe® Program has been a leading source for education and certification for more than 100 years. NCRLA members receive a 20% discount on ServSafe® Manager Certification, Food Handler Certification, Alcohol Training, and Allergens Training.

There’s also new training available on sexual harassment prevention. The online course features scenario-based learning and focuses on the responsibility employees have for ensuring a respectful and inclusive workplace.

American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute

For the past 70 years, the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) has provided education and training for workers in the hospitality industry. Offering textbooks (print and digital), skill guides, online courses, and more, AHLEI is a global leader in hospitality training. Textbooks and other training products are available in many languages, including Spanish and Chinese.

Human trafficking training

NCRLA is partnering with Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST) to offer free human trafficking training for members and their employees. The training addresses common indicators of human trafficking and gives action steps for how to respond and prevent exploitation.

Individual online training is available in English and Spanish, and everyone who completes the course will receive a certificate.

Employee training and upskilling are main factors that can make or break a business in the hospitality industry. Support your employees by providing the information, resources, and time to develop their knowledge and skills. Businesses that take this employee-centric approach will be best positioned to retain top talent.
