NC ProStart Invitational

The North Carolina ProStart Invitational (NCPI) is a culinary competition highlighting the creative abilities of ProStart program students from across the state. During the competition, competitors prepare a three-course meal in 60 minutes, using only two butane burners, and without access to running water or electricity. The culinary teams are evaluated on taste, skill, teamwork, safety and sanitation.

Competitors can also compete in the management competition, which requires management teams to develop a proposal for the next promising restaurant concept and present it to the panel of industry judges. Students must communicate their entrepreneurial ideas clearly and use their problem-solving skills to solve challenges faced by managers daily.

The next NCPI is Feb. 25-27, 2018, at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte. North Carolina ProStart schools are welcome to bring two teams--culinary and/or management--with up to five students per team.

Registration per participant is $45. Registration will open this fall, and the deadline to register is Jan. 12, 2018. A room block for participants is available at the DoubleTree by Hilton on the JWU campus for $119 per night.

The ProStart program is used in more than 1,700 high schools in 50 states, Guam and on U.S. military bases, and reaches nearly 100,000 secondary students annually. Many post-secondary schools in the nation recognize ProStartā€™s Certificate of Achievement, which is awarded to students who complete both levels of the program and at least 400 hours of work experience, and reward them with scholarship and credits. The state competition continues to expand, with a 40 percent increase in schools participating than last year. The two schools that place the highest in the state competition will move forward to the national competition in April.
